Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a method of evaluating and alleviating restriction in the central nervous system

Here is a bit about how it works:

The craniosacral system is a physiological body system, like the respiratory & cardiovascular system. The craniosacral system includes the cranium, sacrum, the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround, protect and sustain the environment around the brain and spinal cord. It has a powerful influence over the other physiological systems including nervous system, endocrine and immune system. Thus, proper functioning of this system is crucial to survival, while an imbalance can cause sensory, motor and/or neurological dysfunctions.

Like the pulse of the beating heart (cardiovascular system), the craniosacral system has a rhythm, called the cranial wave. This constant wave movement of the cerebrospinal fluid is as critical to life as the movement of blood throughout the body. The subtle flexion and extension movement of the cranial bones and sacrum maintain this circulation. Restrictions in any part of the system can result in inadequate flow to that area of the brain or spinal cord. Because the craniosacral system becomes the rest of the body via fascia, we can work with the layers of fascia to access the craniosacral system. In doing so, we can “unwind” the restrictions in the physical & subtle body resulting in more ease, mobility and well being.

Craniosacral Therapy for All Ages

While CST is excellent for people, young and old, it is tremendously beneficial for two infants and pregnant women.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy does not need to hurt.

A mother’s body can become compromised due to anything from injuries, accidents, emotional trauma or even her own birth experience.  An imbalance within the mothers body influences the space in which baby develops. Growing baby will take a position where they can best be accommodated in mom’s body.

If torsion or structural imbalance exists this can lead to malposition of the baby which can cause pain and complications in pregnancy and birth. Many of the discomforts of pregnancy can be alleviated by restoring balance with Craniosacral therapy. Mother’s report a deeper sense of well-being, easier labors and even improved birth outcomes.

Infants / Children

The gentle touch of CST is a safe and effective technique for children, infants and newborns.

Often the positioning of baby in the womb, or events during the birth process can result in distortions in the cranial bones and/or connective tissues in the body of a newborn.

With early identification and release of restrictions in the craniosacral system, infants especially can benefit from the CST, thereby helping prevent future difficulties such as learning disabilities or hyperactivity.

Cranial molding is completely normal and necessary at birth but should be resolved within two days after birth. Babies who have asymmetry of the cranial bones after two days may be likely to have nursing or digestive difficulties. These are also babies who often develop colic when they begin to grow and the restrictions become more noticeable. Additionally, craniosacral therapy has been found to offer positive results for children with chronic ear infections or learning disabilities.
